While the first day of the draft may get all the hype, there's typically plenty of talent still…
Q&A with Yankees 2nd Round Pick Peter O'Brien
Peter O'Brien: It's awesome, you know. I'm looking forward to being a Yankee and playing for the greatest organization in baseball.
PinstripesPlus.com: Tell us about your game a little bit. What type of player are you, and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Yankees?
O'Brien: I'm definitely a leader. I'm a winner. I love being back there behind the plate. I definitely have a lot of power. I got a good arm. I just got to work on the things I need to work on and help the team win some World Series'. I'm definitely going to want quite a few.
PinstripesPlus.com: What would you say your weaknesses are?
O'Brien: I wouldn't say necessarily I have any weaknesses. There's things I have to work on. You really have to work on everything. Everybody always says catching defensively. I'm a pretty big guy - I'm 6'5 - so I'm definitely working on my flexibility and my receiving and stuff like that to be able to stick behind the plate. But I'm a hard worker, and I never take no for an answer so that's definitely something I'm going to work on, and I'm going to exceed on back there.
PinstripesPlus.com: What about blocking balls, and things like that. How do you feel about those skills?
O'Brien: That comes along with the flexibility. I haven't been catching for a long time. I've probably been catching since my senior year of high school. As I'm back there more, and as I get in more games, I'm only going to get better with time.
PinstripesPlus.com: As far as watching other major leaguers, who would you compare your game to the most just to give fans an idea?
O'Brien: I wouldn't say there's necessarily one person I can compare my game to most. You can definitely throw out guys like Matt Weiters; he's a good guy, lot of power, good arm. He's a great catcher defensively, also. I'd say that's probably one of the guys that's closest to my game. You can throw Mauer in there, also.
PinstripesPlus.com: Were you surprised being drafted by the Yankees? What were your expectations going into it?
O'Brien: It was awesome. I was a long day yesterday, long day today. Just being able to sit in front of the computer and hear my name called it was really a blessing.
PinstripesPlus.com: Do you think you're going to stay at catcher for a long period of time, or do you see the Yankees moving you around?
O'Brien: I definitely think I can stick behind the plate. It's whatever they feel I'm going to succeed in the most. But I was drafted as a catcher, and I feel that's my strongest position. Not only because I have the tools to be back there, and have the work ethic to be back there, but I have the natural leadership to stick behind there, and run a ball club, and run a pitching staff.
PinstripesPlus.com: Looking back on your career and everything you've done, what would you say your best moment was?
O'Brien: I couldn't tell you. This year in Miami was definitely a good year. I enjoyed it. Playing in the Team USA, being in the Cape Cod league. I wouldn't say it's as much sort of a greatest moment. I would say it's just the opportunities that have opened up for me, and everywhere I've gone that baseball as taken me, and everyone that I've met.
PinstripesPlus.com: What were your favorite team and player growing up?
O'Brien: [laughs] I'm going to say it's the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter, for sure.
PinstripesPlus.com: Now that you've been drafted, what are your immediate plans? Do you plan on signing and playing right away?
O'Brien: Definitely, I'm really excited I was drafted by them. I'm just looking forward to getting a deal done quick, and getting out there and sticking behind the plate.
