Kyle Zimmer was drafted in the 1st round (5th overall) of the 2012 draft out of the University of San Francisco. He signed quickly and made his professional debut a little over a month after the draft. He was able to make nine starts before undergoing a minor surgery to clean up his elbow – something the Royals knew would need to happen when he was drafted.

In all, he made three dominant starts in the Arizona rookie league before making the jump to A-ball with Kane County, where he made six more starts. He finished the year with a combined 9 games started, 39.2 innings pitched, a WHIP of 1.20, and 9.6 K/9 rate.
