De Paula Can Be Better

CHARLESTON, SC— Last Sunday, in only his fourth start with the Charleston RiverDogs, 22-year old Rafael De Paula threw five hitless innings and recorded 10 strikeouts against the Hickory Crawdads on the road. The right-hander is rapidly learning what it takes to gain momentum as a starting pitcher.

In 2010, the Yankees signed De Paula as a non-drafted free agent. Before this season, the 212-pounder pitched for the rookie-level Dominican Summer League. While he was there, De Paula went 8-2 with a 1.46 ERA. The 6-2 righty also shared the title of most wins within the league and was ranked second in strikeouts.
