Last year, these states produced 7 high round picks that turned pro: 1st rounder North Carolina RHP Hunter Harvey/Orioles, 2nd rounders Kentucky RHP Clinton Hollon/Blue Jays, Kentucky LHP Hunter Green/Angels and North Carolina 3B Ryder Jones/Giants, 3rd rounder Ohio RHP David Ledbetter/Rangers, 4th rounder Maryland CF Matt McPhearson/D'Backs and 10th rounder that received 3rd round money Virginia LHP Austin Nicely/Astros. The three best prep prospects in Tennessee were all right handers and all made it to campus for various reasons: Kyle Serrano/Tennessee, Jordan Sheffield/Vanderbilt and Wil Crowe/South Carolina. Also, the top prospect in Ohio (RHP Eric Lauer/Kent State) and top two prospects in Virginia (RHP Connor Jones/Virginia and 2B Andy McGuire/Texas) all ended up making it to campus. Some of those high picks from 2013 were overdraft, underslot bonus types so when you line up 2013 and 2014 based on talent, they're basically equal. This year's class has the best prospect in either class (North Carolina 1B Braxton Davidson) and it's obviously early enough that more players can emerge from the bottom half of the list, so I'd give 2014 a slight edge right now.
North Carolina and Virginia are the top programs in this area and rightfully dominate this list with a number of players in the sweet spot colleges are shooting for in recruiting: rounds 3-5. Both schools should get a number of high level talents on campus though it's too early to know exactly which ones will make it. South Carolina and Vanderbilt are among the other power programs showing up on the list but Tennessee is one program with a very solid class right now (with some players outside this region) and may be on the rise if they can get most of this class on campus.

2014 MLB Draft Prospects (Top 5 Rounds, High School: NC/VA/MD/DE/WV/TN/KY/OH)
* #13 RHP Jacob Bukauskas recently reclassified from the 2015 class to the 2014 class this summer, enabling him to enroll at North Carolina after the season with peers in the 2014 draft class, but Bukauskas will not be draft eligible. This situation happened three years ago with current Florida Gators junior C Taylor Gushue, who will be draft eligible for the first time this spring. Bukauskas will be omitted from other 2014 MLB Draft rankings.
