Southern California had 13 notable prep players turn pro from last year's draft: 1st rounders 1B Dominic Smith/Mets, SS J.P. Crawford/Phillies and LHP Ian Clarkin/Yankees, 2nd rounders 3B Ryan McMahon/Rockies, LHP Blake Taylor/Pirates, C Chance Sisco/Orioles, 2B Gosuke Katoh/Yankees and 3B Kevin Franklin/Reds, 3rd rounder LHP Chris Kohler/A's, 4th rounder that signed for 2nd round money LHP Stephen Gonsalves/Twins and 4th rounders C Jake Sweaney/Phillies and SS Tyler Wade/Yankees along with overslot 5th rounder SS Trae Arbet/Pirates. There was only one impact guy that got to campus, unsigned Blue Jays 1st rounder, RHP Phil Bickford/Cal St. Fullerton. This year's crop lines up pretty well as far as depth and high-end talent and I would give 2014 the slight edge as I think this year's class is a little more talented in the top two rounds.
Southern California is the most densely-populated area for prospects on the west coast and there are many high level programs that rely on it for talent. It's pretty clear from the below list that UCLA has the best collection of talent this year, with six commits and no other school with more than two. It's still too early to decide which school may get the most from this class at the college level with many of the top players turning pro and some of the better college type players still uncommitted.
