Moving On: Brown Coming To Yanks

Kevin Brown Is On His Way To The Bronx

The Yankees responded quickly the Andy Pettitte's signing with the Houston Astros on Thursday. New York has agreed to send Jeff Weaver, two prospects and cash to the Dodgers for ace pitcher Kevin Brown. The deal is pending the approval of Brown and that all the players pass physicals.

New York Newsday and the Associated Press are both reporting that the deal is done pending approval and physicals. The AP cited "baseball officials" as the source of their report.

The Dodgers are willing to trade Brown, a former 20-game winner and two-time ERA leader because of the size of his contract, which will pay him roughly $15 million in each of the next two seasons. Brown, who will turn 39 before the 2004 season, missed significant time in 2001 and 2002 with injuries, but stayed healthy for most of last year when he made 32 starts and pitched 211 innings.

The Dodgers would get Jeff Weaver, who hasn't shown the ability to pitch in New York and is due $17.5 million over the next two seasons, will hopefully get a new start to his career in LA. The two prospects that will be sent haven't been named yet, but we'll keep you updated.

Brown was 14-9 with a 2.39 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 2003, and is 197-131 with a 3.16 ERA for his career. When healthy, he is one of the game's elite pitchers, but age and health are big question marks. Brown will likely be the Yankees' third starter behind Mike Mussina and Javier Vazquez, and in front of some combination of Jose Contreras, Jon Lieber and David Wells.
