PP Game Notes: Yankees 3 - White Sox 1

Posada Hit His Third Homerun Of 2004

Javier Vazquez finally pitch in pinstripes in a game that meant something, and he made it count. Vazquez proved to be too much for the White Sox to handle, and Jorge Posada hit his third homerun of the season as the Yankees won 3-1.

Vazquez looked sharp right from the get-go. He was throwing all of his pitches for strikes and was fanning batters with his curve and change... He allowed just two hits and a run over eight innings, striking out five and walking two for the win... Mariano Rivera earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth... The Yanks took advantage of Scott Schoenweis' control problems in the first. Loading the bases with back-to-back walks for Gary Sheffield, who drove in a run with an infield single. Jorge Posada added a sacrifice fly to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead... Paul Konerko's RBI single in the fourth accounted for the Sox' only run of the night... Posada homered deep to left in the sixth to make it 3-1, he has eight RBI in five games... Schoenweis took the loss, allowing three runs over six, and he walked four... Jon Adkins retired four straight batters in relief for Chicago... Bernie Williams started in centerfield again, Kenny Lofton is nursing a sore leg... The only Yankee in the starting lineup with a batting average over .300 is Jason Giambi (.357)... The Yanks have won their home opener for seven straight seasons... A-Rod was cheered loudly in his first at bat. He went 0/2 with two walks and a run scored...

The second game of the four-game series is on Friday at 4:05 PM. Jon Garland will face off against Jose Contreras.
