A-Rod Face Sums Up The Loss
A-Rod Face Sums Up The Loss

Posted Apr 9, 2004

Jose Contreras was wild in his first start of the season and poor fielding sealed the Yankees fate. The lone bright spot for the Yankees was Bubba Crosby's first major-league homerun. Chicago took advantage of every opportunity that came up and walked away with a 9-3 victory over the Yankees on Friday.

The Yankees got their first run in the second on a Hideki Matsui RBI bloop-single that scored Gary Sheffield, who doubled... Chicago scored four runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth to walk away with the easy victory... Magglio Ordonez went 2/4 with five RBI, including a three-run homerun off of Contreras in the fifth... Things fell apart defensively in the sixth for the Yankees. With runners at second and third and the infield in, Derek Jeter fielded Willie Harris' grounder and fired home. Catcher John Flaherty dropped the ball and both runners scored. Two batters later, Ordonez hit a flare into right-center that Bernie Williams didn't see, and two runs scored on the play... Williams had a terrible day in center and Flaherty did as well behind the plate. Williams lost a few balls in the sun and Flaherty had trouble handling Contreras, who took the loss... Contreras was all over the place later in the game. He walked three, but threw 105 pitches in just 5.1 innings, and only 58 for strikes...

The lowest part of the day came in the fourth, when Jon Garland walked four batters in the inning, but the Yankees failed to score because Hideki Matsui was caught leading off second base... Felix Heredia gave up four runs without retiring a batter... Garland earned the win, despite walking seven batters. He allowed four hits in eight innings... Shingo Takatsu made his major-league debut. The first hitter he faced, Matsui, doubled to right and Bubba Crosby followed with his first career homerun, but Derek Jeter struck out looking to end the game.

Game three of the four-game set is on Saturday at 1:05 PM Eastern time. Dan Wright will face Jorge DePaula
