PP Game Notes: Red Sox 5 - Yankees 2

Jeter Made A Costly Error In The Third

The Yankees continued their poor performance of late, falling to the Red Sox for the second straight time. Mike Mussina didn't looked all right for the fourth straight time this season and the offense just couldn't get anything going. Curt Schilling struck out eight and Johnny Damon had two RBI to lead the Sox to a 5-2 win.

Boston got to Mussina in the second inning, when the Moose lost total control of his pitches. He walked two batters and gave up a single to load the bases, then walked Damon to bring in a run. His next pitch hit Bill Mueller for another score and the Sox were up 2-0... Bad defense hurt the Yankees in the third as Kevin Millar reached base on Derek Jeter's error - his second in as many games. The Sox loaded the bases again and Millar scored on Gabe Kapler's sharp groundout to third... Tony Clark got the Yankees on the board with his second homerun of the season, a solo shot in the fifth... Boston added runs in the fifth and eighth on a Manny Ramirez homerun and a Damon double... The Yankees tried to make it interesting in the ninth with two outs. Ruben Sierra singled off of Keith Foulke and scored on Jeter's RBI single, but Bernie Williams grounded out to first to end the game.

Mussina looked timid on the mound again, something he's been doing all season long. His record fell to 1-3 and his ERA now stands at 7.52. Something is clearly not right with him. He walked four and struck out just two... Schilling improved to 2-0, allowing just one run on six hits and four walks... Donovan Osborne pitched the last three innings for the Yankees, allowing a run on three hits while striking out four... The Yankees made two errors and grounded into two double plays. They've been playing sloppy baseball for most of the season now.

Game three of the four-game set is scheduled for 2:05 PM Eastern time. Jose Contreras (0-1) will face Derek Lowe (1-0)
