PP Game Notes: Yankees 8 - Angels 7

It only took six hours and twenty minutes, but the Yankees finally walked away as winners in a wild one at the Stadium. Ten innings, two rain delays, five lead changes and a bunch of blown saves ended up with the Yanks snapping the Angels' winning streak with a 8-7 victory Tuesday night.

Gary Sheffield's double off the wall in the tenth scored Alex Rodriguez from first base and put the 'W' in the books... Anaheim jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Kevin Brown on a Vladimir Guerrero double and Troy Glaus two-run homer... The Yankees would have to play the comeback game yet again in this one, scoring two in third on Derek Jeter's double and A-Rod's RBI single... The Angels distanced themselves further with a sacrifice fly in the fourth that brought their lead to 4-2... In the fifth, Kenny Lofton slapped an RBI triple and scored on A-Rod single to tie the game at 4-4... Guerrero's solo homerun in the next frame gave the Halos the lead again... Going into the eighth inning down a run, the Yanks had to face Francisco Rodriguez, who hadn't allowed an earned run all season. With two outs and two runners on, Jeter singled up the middle to tie the game. Rodriguez slapped a grounder to third base that was bobbled by Shane Halter. Rodriguez was safe and Lofton scored to give the Yanks the lead... Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth to close the door, but ran into trouble. Casey Kotchman singled to left for his first Major-League hit and the next batter, Bengie Molina tagged a two-run homer to right to give Anaheim the lead, again... Troy Percival attempted to save it for the Angels, but Ruben Sierra hit a single up the middle that scored pinch runner Homer Bush to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

Jeter's RBI single was the first earned run that Rodriguez had given up all season... The runs the Yanks scored in the fifth represented the first time that reliever Kevin Gregg had allowed more than one run in an outing... Rivera's was the first blown save for him this season, and his first since August of 2003... Percival's blown save was his second... The Yanks now have 13 come-from-behind wins... Jeter went 3/6 and A-Rod went 3/5 with a pair of stolen bases. Ruben Sierra went 2/5 and Lofton was 2/4 with a pair of walks... There was a combined two hours in rain delays throughout the game... Chone Figgins and Guerrero each had three hits for the Angels.

Tom Gordon (1-1) pitched the tenth and earned his first win as a Yankee. Ben Weber (0-1) took the loss for the Angels.

The second game of the three-game set will be on Wednesday at 7:05 PM. Aaron Sele will face Javier Vazquez.
