PP Game Notes: Yankees 7 - Angels 4

Bernie Williams and Jon Lieber tag-teamed the Angels and lead the Yankees to a 7-4 win on Thursday afternoon. Williams had three hits, including a home run, and Lieber pitched eight strong innings for the victory.

The Yankees opened the scoring in this game for a change. They loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning, and scored a run on Jason Giambi's RBI single. Gary Sheffield grounded into a double play as the next batter, but Bernie Williams scored on the play for a 2-0 Yankee lead... Giambi made it 3-0 in the third with another RBI single that scored Williams... Anaheim tied the game in the fourth with four straight hits, including a three-run homerun from Jose Guillen off of Jon Lieber... Ruben Sierra put the Yanks ahead for good with his third home run of the season, a solo job to right field off of Angels' starter John Lackey... Hideki Matsui hit a solo shot in the seventh and Williams drove himself in in seventh with his second of the year. Matsui added an RBI double in the eighth for a 7-3 lead... Anaheim made it interesting in the ninth, scoring a run on Tom Gordon, but Mariano Rivera came on and, after loading the bases with two outs, struck out Shane Halter to end the game and earn his 13th save.

Lieber (2-1) retired the first 11 Angels in a row before allowing the four hits in the fourth. He then retired the next 11 Angels before allowing a double to Adam Kennedy in the eighth. Lieber hasn't walked a batter yet this season in 21 innings. He struck out six and allowed five hits... Lackey (3-4) allowed six runs on ten hits and a walk. He struck out five... The Yankees won the series 2-1, despite being outscored by the Angels 22-17. They haven't lost a series since being swept by the Red Sox almost three weeks ago.

The Seattle Mariners come to town next for a three-game series... Mike Mussina (3-4, 4.93) will pitch the first game of the series against the M's Gil Meche (1-3, 4.88)
