Posada Was Thrown Out At The Plate In The 9th

Posted May 19, 2004

Javier Vazquez and Aaron Sele locked horns in a terrific pitcher's duel. So terrific, in fact, that at the end of nine innings, neither team had scored a run. The Angels finally got one through on Adam Riggs' walk-off RBI single in the 11th innings to take a 1-0 win.

Vazquez pitched seven innings of sparkling baseball. He allowed five hits, a pair of walks and struck out five while lowering his ERA back down to 3.58... Sele was equally as brilliant, allowing just two hits and four walks while fanning two... After the seventh, however, it was a battle of bullpens. Four relievers on both sides combined for seven scoreless innings before Paul Quantrill finally coughed up the winning run... Jeff Davanon led off the frame with a single to right and Vladimir Guerrero took the first pitch he saw to left field for a single. Alfredo Amezaga sacrificed both runners over and the Yankees intentionally walked Casey Kotchman to load the bases for Riggs, who had been called up to the majors earlier in the day. Riggs slashed a single over Gary Sheffield's head in right to scored Davanon and win the game.

The Yankees had their chances to score, but squandered them with double plays, botched steals and untimely hitting (or lack thereof)... In the fourth, Sheffield led off the inning by reaching first on an error. He was then caught stealing. Three Yankees then walked to load the bases, but Miguel Cairo grounded out to end the threat... In the eighth, Kenny Lofton, who had led off the frame with a walk, was caught stealing third while Alex Rodriguez was batting with one out... In the ninth, Jorge Posada tried to score from second base on Bernie Williams' base hit to right field, but was thrown out at the plate easily by Guerrero... The Yanks combined for just three hits, two by Lofton and Williams' single.

Scot Shields (3-0) got the win in relief for the Halos, pitching two perfect innings... Quantrill (4-2) was charged with the loss. He pitched 1.1 innings and allowed four hits.

Game two of the three game set is on Wednesday at 10:05 PM Eastern time. Jon Lieber (2-1, 5.14) will face Anaheim's John Lackey (3-4, 4.80).
