PP Game Notes: Yankees 6 - Angels 2

Mike Mussina pitched a gem against the Anaheim Angels and Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui both went yard as the Yankees won by a final score of 6-2. The Yankees have now won seven consecutive series.

Derek Jeter led off the game with a bloop single to left, moved to third on Bernie Williams' single up the middle and scored on Alex Rodriguez' sacrifice fly to give the Yanks a 1-0 lead in the first... Jeter then crushed a solo home run to centerfield in the third for a 2-0 lead. It was his third homer of the season... Matsui made it 4-0 in the fourth with his sixth home run of the season that scored Gary Sheffield ahead of him... The Angels scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on Vladimir Guerrero's ground out... New York made it 6-1 via a Jorge Posada two-RBI double to right field... Anaheim tried to rally in the ninth and scored a run off of Paul Quantrill, but Adam Riggs grounded out to end the game.

Mussina (5-4) easily out-pitched Bartolo Colon to win his fourth-straight start... Mosse lasted 7.2 innings and allowed one run on seven hits while fanning six. He retired the first nine Angels he faced before David Eckstein broke through with an infield single in the fourth... Colon (4-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four... Ramon Ortiz pitched four brilliant innings in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out six.

The Yankees now head to Texas for a three-game series with the Rangers. Game one is on Friday at 8:05 PM Eastern time. Kevin Brown (5-0, 3.13) will face off against Joaquin Benoit (1-1, 5.10).
