Yankees Snatch George Kontos In The 5th

Posted Jun 6, 2006

Continuing to stock up on pitchers, the Yankees selected righty pitcher from Northwestern University, George Kontos. While Kontos struggled this year, he is said to have one of the best arms and to be one of the best pitching talents in the draft.

While his numbers at Northwestern this year may not show it, George Kontos has electric stuff and ace potential if he can put it all together. The 6' 3", 215 pounder is armed with a plus, 90-94 MPH fastball and a power mid-80's slider with the potential to be a prolific strikeout pitcher.

After performing beautifully in the Cape Cod League last year, Kontos struggled his command of his power stuff and his numbers show it. He went 3-10 with a bloated 5.29 ERA in 95.1 innings of work. But, most scouts feel that professional instruction and facing wood bats could do wonders for him. As a matter of fact, some feel he could be either a top of the rotation starter or even a lights out closer.
