Q&A with Yanks 8th Rd Pick, Taylor Grote

Grote also played wide receiver in high school

We sat down with Yankees' eighth round pick, Taylor Grote, for a Draft Day Q&A session. A two-sport star who also played wide receiver for his football team, find out who the centerfielder from The Woodlands High School in Texas compares his game to at the big league level, how he feels being drafted by the Yankees, if he's looking to sign soon, and more.

PinstripesPlus.com: What does it feel like to be drafted by the New York Yankees?

Taylor Grote: Well it's a great opportunity. It's obviously a great organization. They're real great people to be around, just a lot of fun and I'm just really excited about this opportunity.

PinstripesPlus: How do you see yourself meshing with the Yankees? What type of player are you?

Grote: I think I play hard. I'm always willing to get better and I think there will be some good opportunities for me to learn from the coaching within the organization. Where I fit in, I guess we'll have to find out, I'm not too sure right now.

PinstripesPlus: What do you consider your strengths and weaknesses?

Grote: I think I play all aspects of the game pretty well. There are definitely things I'd like to work on, but I don't think I have one all-out weakness.

PinstripesPlus: Whose game can you compare yourself to?

Grote: Well I'm not obviously up to his skills now, but Carlos Beltran, someone like that who really hits for power, hits for average, can run and throw, and do a lot of different things well.

PinstripesPlus: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Yankees or surprised at their selection?

Grote: I knew it was a possibility. I wasn't surprised but I didn't know for sure. You know, just a little of both.

PinstripesPlus: Do you think you'll stay as a centerfielder with the Yankees or do you expect to be moved to other positions on the field?

Grote: I don't really know what they have in store for me. I played centerfield for my high school team. I actually started my baseball career when I was younger as a catcher, that was kind of always my main thing. When I was twelve I started playing outfield pretty much full time.

PinstripesPlus: What do you consider your best moment on the field?

Grote: The State Championships. My highs chool team was state champion and voted national champions by Baseball America and USA Today. That was probably my greatest on-field baseball moment. And today [getting drafted] would definitely be up there.

PinstripesPlus: Do you have a favorite player and favorite team?

Grote: I would have to go with, currently, either Lance Berkman or Manny Ramirez. Besides the Yankees, my favorite team would probably have to be the Astros.

PinstripesPlus: What are your plans now that you've been drafted?

Grote: Well, I'm not signing today, but within the next week or two I'll hopefully be signing.
