Q&A with Yanks 26th Rd Pick, Gary Gattis

Gattis grew up playing second base

We sat down with Yankees' 26th round pick, Gary Gattis, for a Draft Day Q&A session. Find out who the outfielder from Yavapai Junior College in Arizona compares his game to at the big league level, how he feels being drafted by the Yankees, if he sees himself moving back to his natural second base position, and more.

PinstripesPlus.com: First off, how does it feel to be drafted by the Yankees?

Gary Gattis: I'm definitely pretty excited about it. It's encouraging to get drafted by a team that has such a historical background in baseball. So aside from getting drafted, it's a bonus just being drafted by the Yankees because of their name.

PinstripesPlus: What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Gattis: I think my strengths are my arm and hitting, and my weaknesses are not enough home run power. I hit gap-to-gap. I'm inexperienced in the outfield because I've been in the infield my whole life.

PinstripesPlus: Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so the Yankees' fans have an idea of what your game is like?

Gattis: Eric Byrnes… I actually know a couple of people who played with him and everyone says that I remind them of him…his playing style, his size, his physical appearance, his tools.

PinstripesPlus: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Yankees or were you surprised when they drafted you?

Gattis: I had talked to them and I had some suspicion I was gonna get drafted by the Yankees but I wasn't 100% positive.

PinstripesPlus: Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you'll be moved to another position?

Gattis: I can see myself, if I get a little faster, playing in the outfield, but also see myself as a second baseman.

PinstripesPlus: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Gattis: Winning the National Championship in the Little League World Series in ‘97. The worst would definitely be losing in the last inning at the World Championships to Mexico.

PinstripesPlus: Who was your favorite team and player growing up?

Gattis: The Braves. I like Andruw Jones. I just like his style, he's smooth. Chipper's too hard-nosed for me.

PinstripesPlus: What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted by the Yankees? Is it your intention to sign now and start your professional career immediately?

Gattis: Yeah, it looks like I'm gonna sign. I want to go out and play. I have to wait until I talk to the guy who's gonna sign me before I know.
