Q&A with Yanks 21st Rd Pick Mitchell Delaney

Delaney has already signed with the Yankees

We sat down with Yankees' 21st round pick, Mitchell Delaney, for a Draft Day Q&A session. Find out what the first baseman/outfielder from Western Texas College says about being drafted by the Yankees, who he would compare himself to at the big league level, why he's ready for the pros now after not being ready last year, and more.

PinstripesPlus.com: Congratulations on being drafted. Tell us what it feels like to be selected by the New York Yankees?

Mitchell Delaney: Well, it felt better this year. Last year, the same thing happened, same round. This year I wasn't nearly as nervous, it wasn't as nerve wracking. I watched it on the Internet with my friends.

PinstripesPlus: Talk about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Yankees?

Delaney: I have a couple of tools, but also a couple of tools I could work on. I wasn't much of a home run hitter in college. I hit the three stick in college, but I think out here I'd be more of a 4-5-6 hitter. I have more gap-to-gap power.

PinstripesPlus: What are your strengths and your weaknesses?

Delaney: My biggest strength, probably my hitting swing. Defensively, I'm good at first, but obviously I can work on that. I'd also like to work on my speed for the outfield. Even with hitting, I feel like I can also always work on it.

PinstripesPlus: Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so the Yankees' fans have an idea of what your game is like?

Delaney: I'd say Larry Walker, probably. He's Canadian, he's left-handed, corner-outfielder, same size, similar hitting approach. He's got more power, but a similar approach at the plate.

PinstripesPlus: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Yankees or were you surprised when they selected you?

Delaney: I was kinda surprised. I had been talking to two teams, they had called during the 18th round, said they were going to draft me, and then, out of the blue the Yankees came in, so yeah, it was definitely a surprise.

PinstripesPlus: Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you'll be moved to another position?

Delaney: Right now, I'm not sure. Likely, I'll be at first, anything could happen though, it doesn't matter much to me where I play.

PinstripesPlus: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Delaney: We had an All-Canadian tournament in Windsor, I think about five years ago. I won the home run tournament, which was awesome because all of my friends were there.

PinstripesPlus: Who was your favorite team and player growing up?

Delaney: My favorite team was the Blue Jays, because they were in Canada. My favorite player had to be Ken Griffey Jr., I just loved his swing, the way he hit the ball.

PinstripesPlus: What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted by the Yankees? Is it your intention to sign now and start your professional career immediately?

Delaney: Just to be playing somewhere soon, working out a lot, getting better. I had signed right away, so I'm ready to go. Last year, it was strange actually, I was drafted in the same round, by the White Sox. That would've been out of high school, so I decided to go to school for one year, and now I'm ready to go with the Yankees.
