Hughes Cutting & Changing In The AFL

PEORIA, AZ - When Phil Hughes found out that he had a stress fracture in his ribs earlier this year, it marked the second time that he missed substantial time during the last two seasons. But he used the additional bullpen work to his advantage and started developing a new pitch that could play a very important role in his future success.

"I kind of picked it up [the cutter] on my own," Phil Hughes said. "I felt my slider just wasn't as effective as it was in high school, just because I started throwing the curveball and I sort of lost the feel for it a little bit, so I started throwing the cutter, which is basically my fastball grip with a little wrist action at the end.
