Brett Smith is trying to find command and velocity

Brett Smith had ascended all the way to Double-A two years ago, posting a sub-3.00 ERA with the Trenton Thunder and on he was his way to a breakout season. Subsequent command issues, however, turned out to be the result of a shoulder injury and that put him on the shelf since then. Now he's back in 2009 and he finds himself trying to get back into the swing of things in Charleston.

Since his selection in the second round of the 2004 draft, Brett Smith has traveled a long and difficult road that has provided many challenges to the right-handed pitcher. Smith, who attended University of California-Irvine, began his professional career in Charleston in 2005. A hand injury put him on the disabled list for a portion of that season.
