Q&A with Yanks 15th round Pick Chase Whitley

Whitley is another two-way player

We sat down with Yankees' tenth round pick, Chase Whitley, for a Draft Day Q&A session. Find out what the right-handed pitcher from Troy University says about his stuff, his favorite player and how he'll fit into the Yankees organization, and more!

PinstripesPlus.com: Tell us what's going through your mind after being selected by the Yankees?

Chase Whitley: I'm actually, to tell you the truth, I'm speechless right now. It's an unbelievable feeling, a dream come true.

PinstripesPlus.com: Were you surprised that the Yankees selected you?

Whitley: They had been talking to me and I knew they were interested. Over the past few weeks I hadn't talked to them very much, but I knew they were interested in me. I had actually gotten a call from the Mets in the 11th round, but they passed on me and then come the 15th round I saw "Chase Whitley" and I was pretty excited.

PinstripesPlus.com: Do you have any idea what the Yankees organization is like, have they been telling you where you might go yet?

Whitley: I'm not sure yet.

PinstripesPlus.com: So, you're a pitcher and third baseman, did the Yankees tell you what they are interested in you as?

Whitley: I'm pretty sure they want me as a pitcher.

PinstripesPlus.com: So take us through your pitches, what speeds, etc.

Whitley: I throw a fastball 88-92, touching 94, my changeup is my best pitch, and I add a slider and curveball.

PinstripesPlus.com: You posted a batting average fifth best in school history, and also had a good year on the mound with Troy, can you tell us how much it meant to you having such a good year?

Whitley: It was pretty amazing, I mean I just went out there and tried my best, and things started clicking for me. It was amazing to see everything come together at the end, and this is the result. I'm very blessed.

PinstripesPlus.com: Do you see yourself signing quickly, even though you're a junior?

Whitley: Yeah, I'm ready to go pro.

PinstripesPlus.com: What was your favorite team growing up?

Whitley: I was a Braves fan growing up. The Yankees always beat the Braves in the 90's, so I hated the Yankees, but I'm going to turn that around real quick, and I can definitely learn to like them.

PinstripesPlus.com: Do you think playing for the Yankees will put a lot of pressure on you?

Whitley: It's just another level. I've been fortunate to be on winning teams everywhere I've been and there's already been lots of pressure. I mean it's not pro ball, but this is just another step.

PinstripesPlus.com: What's your best baseball moment and why?

Whitley: Winning the state championship my junior year of high school definitely ranks as the best moment.
