PinstripesPlus: First off, how has your experience with the New York Yankees organization been so far?James Cooper: Well, I got in about a week and a half ago. As a whole, so far my experience has been really good. I like my teammates and my coaches especially. I have also learned some new things coming out of college, and I am just trying to go out there and have some fun. Hopefully, I can make it to the big leagues.
PinstripesPlus: Were you excited when you heard your name called on draft day and it was, in fact, the Yankees?
Cooper: Without a doubt, I was real excited. The Yankees have been my favorite team since I was a little kid. Having an opportunity to come out here and play for the Yankees is really a blessing. Not many people get the chance to play for this organization. I am just excited to be here and really blessed.
PinstripesPlus: You've been batting second, is that where you would like to see yourself in the order?
Cooper: Whereever the coach puts me is where I will play. I will do whatever it takes for me to help this team win. That is what I am here to do and that is what I plan on doing. It doesn't matter to me whether I bat second or ninth, just as long as were winning.
PinstripesPlus: Do you feel that college helped you maturity-wise? Is it better to go away to college for a couple of years before taking this big step?
Cooper: Personally, for myself, I think that it has helped me. When I first got to Staten Island, I already knew a lot of stuff that they teach the guys. But I believe there is no question that it helps you. Not only do you mature, but you grow as a person. I wouldn't trade that for anything and I am here no so, it worked out.
PinstripesPlus: What would you say your best attribute is?
Cooper: I think, above any physical thing, is being a team player. I like to go out there and help the guys anyway I can. Whether I go up to them and tell them they are doing something wrong or I tell them they are doing something right, I just want to be part of the team. I'll do whatever I need to do to help the team get a win. I just want to help this team win a championship.
PinstripesPlus: Do you have any goals for the season whether they be team-wise or individually?
Cooper: Well, team-wise, I just want to win a championship. And I think, individually, I just want to hit .300. Batting means a lot to me and .300 would be a good mark to shoot for. I know that it is very hard to do but I know if I keep working on it, I'll be right there.
