Signed as a free agent by the Yankees in December, 2003... Originally a 17th round draft pick by the Houston Astros in the 1988 amateur draft... Only played 20 games for Houston in 1991 before being dealt to the Cleveland Indians for the 1992 season... Won four Gold Gloves from 1993-96 and finished fourth in the MVP balloting in 1994 when he hit .349 with 12 homeruns and 60 stolen bases in the strike-shortened season... Was traded to Atlanta for the 1997 season before re-signing with Cleveland from 1998 through 2001... Hit .327 after being traded from the Pirates to the Cubs in 2003.
Lofton is a prototypical leadoff hitter, with the ability to make contact, hit for good average and get on base. He has 538 stolen bases in his career, the second-most among active players and 28th-most in history. |
