PP Game Notes: Yankees 9 - Mariners 5

Gil Meche Didn't Make It Out Of The First Inning

The Yankees walked to victory over the Mariners, drawing a season-high 10 bases on balls and winning 9-5 on Friday. Tony Clark's go-ahead RBI single in the fifth was the difference maker and Bernie Williams' two-RBI double in the seventh put the M's away for good.

Yankee starter Mike Mussina didn't look sharp on the mound right from the start. He allowed a leadoff double to Ichiro Suzuki, who later scored on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Seattle lead... The Yankees started the walk machine in the bottom of the first. With two outs and runners at the corners, Seattle pitcher Gil Meche walked four straight batters to give the Yanks a 3-1 lead and knock himself out of the game before ending the first... Seattle scored a run in the third and then used five hits in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead... In the bottom of the fourth, Ron Villone walked Bernie Williams with the bases loaded and Alex Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at five... Clark singled in the fifth to bring home the go-ahead run... Gary Sheffield scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to pad the lead and, two outs later, Williams doubled to the right-field corner to bring home two more for a 9-5 lead...

Gabe White pitched the final two innings flawlessly to preserve the win for the Yanks... Mussina (4-4) allowed 11 hits and five runs while walking one and striking out none, but he evened his record... Meche (1-4) was handed the loss, walking four in just 2/3 of an inning... Villone pitched 3.2 innings in relief, and all three runs he allowed were unearned thanks to his own fielding errors... Clark was 2/2 with two runs, two RBI and two walks. He was filling in for Jason Giambi, who was sidelined with a sore hip... Giambi entered the game in the seventh, was intentionally walked and then left for a pinch runner... Derek Jeter and Ruben Sierra - hitting cleanup tonight - both went 0/5...

The second game of the three-game set is Saturday at 1:05 PM... Jamie Moyer (1-2, 4.70) will pitch for Seattle against the Yankees' Donovan Osborne (2-0, 7.11).
